Wood is the material able to offer the best guarantees and technical solutions for the development of various types of constructions: given the significant large range of varieties present in nature, the one with the most suitable characteristics should be chosen depending on the work at hand.

Segna most commonly uses the following varieties: fir, larch, douglas, oak and chestnut.

Fir
Silver Fir ABAL (abies alba)

    • Appearance: white with red grain.
    • Specific weight: fresh 920 kg/m³; seasoned 440 kg/m³.
    • Natural durability: class 4.
    • Volume reduction: from low to medium.
    • Characteristics: straight, imposing shaft conformation.
    • Uses: ideal for the production of semi-finished products for use in construction. It is also used in producing packaging, scaffolding and frames (for preference in dry environments).
    • Visible class: Square-Edged Beams: S7, S10, S13; Uso Trieste and Uso Fiume Beams: UTS/A, UFS/A.

  • Appearance: yellowish sapwood and red or brown heartwood.
  • Specific weight: fresh 860 kg/m³; seasoned 650 kg/m³.
  • Natural durability: class 3/4.
  • Volume reduction: medium.
  • Characteristics: presence of resin pockets within the wood and mediocre nerve levels.
  • Uses: ideal for the production of Square-Edged Beams, Uso Fiume, Turned woods, Beading, Fencing, Poles and carpentry in general, also suitable for structures exposed to the action of atmospheric agents and façade cladding.
  • Visible class: S7, S10, S13.
  • Mechanical resistance class: C16, C24, C30.

Douglasia

    • Appearance: whitish sapwood with yellowish and pinkish hues and pinkish/yellowish heartwood.
    • Specific weight: fresh 700 kg/m³; seasoned 500 kg/m³.
    • Natural durability: class 3/4.
    • Volume reduction: medium.
    • Characteristics: linear conformation and large size.
    • Uses: ideal for the production of Square-Edged Beams, Uso Fiume, Turned woods, Fencing and Poles for outdoor use, used both for support structures and for upholstery and furnishing elements.
    • Visible class: S7, S10, S13.
    • Mechanical resistance class: C16, C24, C35.
Rovere

    • Appearance: whitish yellowish sapwood and brown heartwood.
    • Specific weight: fresh 1,080 kg/m³; seasoned 780 kg/m³.
    • Natural durability: class 2.
    • Volume reduction: high.
    • Characteristics: fairly straight, regular trunks, good mechanical resistance to compression and bending and excellent resistance to atmospheric agents.
    • Uses: ideal for the production of Square-Edged Beams, Uso Fiume, Beading and Planks, also excellent when used in carpentry, woodwork and road and naval constructions.
    • Visible class: LS10.
    • Mechanical resistance class: D30.
Castagno

    • Appearance: light, slightly veined pink colour.
    • Specific weight: fresh 1,000 kg/m³; seasoned 580 kg/m³.
    • Natural durability: class 2.
    • Volume reduction: from low to medium.
    • Characteristics: irregular and dissimilar shaft, lots of knots.
    • Uses: ideal for the production of Square-Edged Beams, Uso Fiume and elements of poles, extensive use in the wood industry.
    • Visible class: S.
    • Mechanical resistance class: D24.
